Auto Firsts in Manitowoc County
Vehicles have been in Manitowoc County for well over a hundred years. There are now speed limits, protocols for accidents, street signs, and other regulated rules of the road. Back when the automobile was not so common, in the early 1900s for example, these basic principles of driving simply did not exist. Knowing how these aspects of driving are today, it is quite interesting to hear the stories of early automobiles in Manitowoc County.
Judge Reed Perished in the 1883 Newhall House Hotel Fire at Milwaukee
Reed came to Manitowoc in 1850, one of the first lawyers in Manitowoc County. In 1851, he was chosen the first president of the village of Manitowoc. He was elected County Judge in 1853 and represented Manitowoc in the State Senate from 1864-1870.
American Legion Gosz-Novak Post 199
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. As towns and villages throughout the country join together to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, constant reminders and memorials can be found throughout our area.
The Reedsville Area Veterans Memorial Park brings together the Reedsville AMVETS Post 1032 and the American Legion Gosz-Novak Post 199 to pay tribute to those who have served in the area. A main feature of the park is a T-33A United States Air Force military aircraft.
Burke Family: From Clarks Mills Store to Manitowoc Lawyer
General stores were the center of economic activity in many small communities in the late 1890s and early 1900s. They were place where seed and crops were bartered or sold and everything people were not able to make or raise at home or on the farm could be found. Storekeepers were leading citizens of their communities, and that was very much true for early Clarks Mills General Store proprietors Richard and Elizabeth (Hammond) Burke.
Reedsville Vet Makes His Mark
Invention is the lifeblood of successful entrepreneurs. It breeds new ideas and changes the way our world works. As our communities moved into the mid-1900s, pioneer ingenuity often led to industrialization. While local entrepreneurs such as William Rahr, J.E. Hamilton, and Henry Stolze are commonly looked upon as industry leaders in our community, many more individuals brought their own creations into practice, including a young Reedsville entrepreneur, Dr. A.H. Junge.
