Civil War School Day
Discover more about Manitowoc County during the Civil War! Participants learn how the soldiers and citizens of the Union lived during the conflict. Meet Civil War legends, watch cavalry and artillery demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities and tour Pinecrest Village's museum buildings. This program is open to all public, private, and home school students. Reservations are required.
Food, Forage, and Flame: Homeschool Family Field Trip
How was food grown, gathered, cooked, and preserved at the turn of the 20th century? Visit the kitchens, gardens, and farms throughout the Historic Village to find out. Plus, gather round to smell the cooking in action, learn how to build an outdoor fire, and so much more!
Fur Trade: Homeschool Family Field Trip
Explore the changes the American Fur Trade brought to the shores of Lake Michigan and it’s people here in the Manitowoc area. Students will be able to explore trade goods, furs, fire starting, and much more.

Exploring Wisconsin History and STEAM (Family Field Trip)
Connect students to history and science through this fun, interactive program. As they rotate through stations, students find out about Wisconsin history related to science, technology, engineering, art and math.
A Colorful Past (Family Field Trip)
Connect history with in color. Learn how color appeared in the everyday lives of people in days gone by. Explore everything from laundry to gardening to printing. The photographs might be black and white, but the rest certainly isn’t.
Winter Work - Lumberjacks, Flapjacks, and Syrup (Family Field Trip)
Celebrate the charm of maple syrup season, as Pinecrest Village buzzes with the energy of early spring. Discover the old-fashioned skills needed to take this sweet treat all the way from tree to table.
From Fibers to Fancy Clothes (Family Field Trip)
Explore how pioneers created their own clothes from fibers and fabrics. Practice skills such as weaving and embroidery. Card wool in preparation for spinning into yarn. Discover how many layers women in the 1800s wore. Try on a hoop skirt!
Fire and Ice (Family Field Trip)
We are firing up the forge in the blacksmith shop and the woodstove in the Sorenson House. We’re bringing out the ice cream maker and sharing the day with friends at the fire department for a bucket brigade (bucket brigade. Learn the roles fire and ice play in the lives of residents in Pinecrest Village.

From helping at the General Store to being a guest in a family’s bustling kitchen, you will learn how to shop, use and measure ingredients, and create recipes.
Holiday Traditions (Homeschool program)
Help the residents and store keepers of Pinecrest Village prepare for the Christmas season! There’s shopping to be done, gifts to wrap, and trees to decorate. Experience some of the holiday traditions that immigrants to Wisconsin brought with them.
Your Voice, Your Vote (Homeschool program)
There is much to decide in the future of the Village of Pinecrest! The experience includes 1900s era issues to debate and then vote at the Two Creeks Town Hall and Meeme Poll House.
Weary Traveler’s Journey (Homeschool)
The year is 1890. You have been traveling through Northeast Wisconsin, looking for a new place to settle and seek your new life. You have your family and two horses with you to pull your wagon.

Civil War (Homeschool Program)
Dress in a Civil War jacket and hat, taste hardtack, learn a drill that soldiers did using Civil War “dummy” guns, and even pick up some Civil War slang. Follow along as a Civil War re-enactor takes you marching, drilling, and following the path of the Flag of Company A.
The ideal age for this program is 4 to 17. Register by August 8.

Pioneer Winter (Homeschool Program)
Experience how pioneers survived harsh Wisconsin winters!
The ideal age for this program is 4 to 17. Register by February 21.

Pinecrest Power (Homeschool Program)
Learn about moving heavy loads with a fulcrum and lever and pulleys. Work with wood tools like a hand drill and a plane. Make molasses cookies and cheese and see chemistry at work. Watch a blacksmith use molecular changes to shape iron! Learn about changes in communication in the 1800s and construct an electrical circuit to send Morse code. See how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and history connect through pioneer power in the 19th century.
Register by September 27.

Discover how the Ingalls Family braved Wisconsin winters as you travel through our Pioneer Village following Laura’s story in The Long Winter. Wood stoves will warm our buildings but please dress in your pioneer winter attire.
